Leaves from the Theater of War

Four goblin heads are framed within boxes and float at the top of the picture plane. An abstracted crucifix divided the plane. Beneath them a mass of human tumult churns and piles of human skulls creating the horizon. Vertical format; black ink on paper.

Leaves from the Theatre of War, 1992,

24 in x 18 in, Ink on Paper

In the early 1980s, Kanso created a series of 242 tragicomedy ink drawings called Leaves from the Theater of War (1980-1992). Titled in English, Arabic, German, French, and Spanish, the series tells the story of a civilization from its conception to its demise.

This universal approach incorporates references to human history, from East to West, with influences spanning from his native Lebanon to Europe to the United States to Central and South America.
