Marking 500 years, from 1492 to 1992, Kanso created the series in anticipation of the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas. The nine mural paintings were executed over three years, between 1989 to 1992, and base their subjects on various defining actions and histories that shaped the Americas over the course of five centuries. The America 500 Years paintings are also part of Kanso's larger series, the Split of Life.
